| History: The original T-34 went through a number of design modifications, especially to the turret layout, in its massive production run. By 1943, the Soviets were looking to provide the T-34 with more strike power and upgunned it to carry the very successful 85mm Zis-S-53 main gun. The armour was also improved in some areas, although the extra weight slowed the tank down marginally.
Combat use: The T-34 85 rapidly became the mainstay of the Soviet tank force, with some 32,000 being produced by the end of the war. It was still a good design, although the 85mm gun did not give as much punch as might be expected. The T-34 85 saw out the war and then went on to equip a large number of Soviet “client” states after the war finished. Some are, miraculously, still operational to this day. In game: The T-34 85 is a good all-round tank, quick and manoeuvrable, with a good main gun. The 85mm cannon has good penetration, although it will still struggle against the frontal armour of the Panther and Tiger. The Panzer IV and StuG are much more vulnerable. The version modelled is from 1944: with so many factories producing the T-34 85 there were inevitably hundreds of small variations as minor tweaks were made to the design.
